Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine is the specialty of radiology that uses radionuclides during medical imaging. Nuclear medicine imaging is useful in evaluating many diseases of the cardiovascular, skeletal, pulmonary, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, central nervous, genitourinary, and endocrine systems. It is also helpful in oncology (cancer) and disorders related to infection and inflammation.

During nuclear medicine imaging, radiopharmaceuticals are either administered by mouth or intravenously. In some instances they may be administered through the skin as a small injection. Images are then obtained using a variety of techniques.
